Let's get meltin’!
When it comes to actually burning your wax melts, this is a different story. Essentially, wax melts are a wickless candle. They’re still made using wax and fragrance oil, the only difference is that you don’t directly light a wax melt.
Wax melts are similar to candles in terms of releasing a fragrance or scent when the wax is heated and melted to a high enough temperature. To melt a wax melt you’re going to need 3 things!
• Your chosen wax melt
• A suitable burner
• A suitable tealight or plug socket if you’re using an electric burner
You simply pop your wax melt onto the top of your burner and turn on your electric wax melter, or if you’re more traditional, you’ll need to grab yourself a tealight, light it and place it in the bottom of your burner. The heat, be it electric, or flame, will begin to melt your wax and fragrance will consequently be released into the room.
When you've had enough of your wax melt, you simply turn off your electric burner or blow out the tea light (we recommend using a wick snuffer for safety) and you can allow the wax to harden before using again. Once your wax starts to lose its scent you simply remove and replace with fresh wax melt.
Here are our top tips for removing wax from their burners;
• Pop your burner in the freezer for a few minutes, then your melt should pop out
• Start burning your wax melt, give it a minute or two and again, it should slide out
• Before allowing your wax to harden after burning, grab a few cotton wool balls and let them soak up your fragrance-less wax melt!
Do wax melts evaporate?
Unlike water, wax doesn’t evaporate. Your quantity of wax will always remain the same, but you’ll notice that your scent will disperse and the intensity will lessen with each burn. You can usually get a few burns out of your wax melt depending on the strength of the scent and how long you burn your melts for each time.
How do I make my wax melts last longer?
From a wax melt maker's side, there are a few ways to ensure that the wax melt’s you’re selling and making last long! Choosing a wax that can handle a high fragrance load is a great place to start. The more fragrance you can get your wax to hold, the stronger and longer-lasting your scent will be when burnt! Selecting strong scents is also a good way to make your wax melts last longer. Stronger and more pungent scents are more likely to linger, our perfume and aftershave dupes are great choices. Lastly is cure time. Leaving your wax melts plenty of time to cure will ensure that your wax and fragrance molecules bond well for optimal scent throw.
As a consumer, there are also a few ways you can make your melts last longer. Storing your wax melts correctly is the first step. Keep your melts sealed and away from sunlight and heat to avoid a loss of scent. Little and often is also a great tip. Wax melts are much smaller than candles and don’t need lots of time to melt and start releasing fragrance. Burn your wax melts for shorter periods and more frequently rather than allowing it to burn for hours on end. Picking the correct burner is also essential! Weigh up whether you want to opt for a flame-less electric burner or a traditional wax melt burner (oil burners are not suitable for wax melts) and remember to select tea lights that are appropriate for your burner.
