How To Make Perfume

Creating your own perfume isn’t just a creative outlet – it’s a sensory experience that allows you to craft a scent that’s uniquely yours. Using perfumers’ alcohol as a base gives your perfume the same quality, clarity and longevity as professional fragrances.

How To Make Perfume

Ingredients and equipment you will need:

Step 1

Measure out the perfumers alcohol using the measuring jug. We are using 80% perfumers alcohol to 20% fragrance oil.

measure the alcohol

Step 2

Gently pour the perfumers alcohol into your chosen perfume bottle.

Step 3

Next measure your fragrance oil, 20% of the overall volume, and pour that into the perfume bottle.

Step 4

Screw the cap back onto the perfume bottle securely to make sure there is no leakage.

Step 5

Shake to combine the fragrance oil & perfumer’s alcohol. And that’s it!

If making a large quantity of perfume, it is recommended that you combine both of the ingredients in a bowl and stir thoroughly before pouring it into the perfume bottle.

FAQs

What are the benefits of using perfumers alcohol?

Unlike rubbing alcohol, perfumer’s alcohol is:

  • Odorless – Won’t distort your fragrance notes
  • Fast evaporating – Perfect for scent diffusion
  • Safe for skin
  • Ideal solvent – Dissolves both essential and fragrance oils

How long should perfume mature before use?

Let it rest for 2–6 weeks. This allows top, middle, and base notes to blend harmoniously and prevents harshness.

Can I use essential oils instead of fragrance oils?

Absolutely! Just ensure they are skin-safe and properly diluted. Essential oils give a natural, earthy scent but may not last as long as synthetic fragrances.

How long does homemade perfume last?

When stored correctly (in a dark, cool place), perfumes can last up to 12–24 months. Avoid direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Is perfumer’s alcohol safe on skin?

Yes — when using cosmetic-grade alcohol and IFRA-compliant oils. Always perform a patch test before applying directly to skin.

Can I sell perfume made with perfumer’s alcohol?

Yes, but you must meet local cosmetic and fragrance regulations, label your ingredients clearly, ensure safety, and maintain supporting documents such as IFRA certificates and safety data sheets.

Do I need a CPSR to sell perfume?
Yes, you must have a Cosmetic Product Safety Report (CPSR) if you plan to sell perfume or any other cosmetic product in the UK or EU. The CPSR confirms that your product is safe for use and complies with cosmetic regulations. Without it, selling your perfume would be illegal. If you’re creating your own blends, you’ll need to get them assessed by a qualified safety assessor before selling.
