What supplies do I need to make candles?

It’s good to know that you can buy your supplies all in one place! Here’s a summary of what you will need to get started on your candle making journey. You can also access our ‘How To Make Candles’ guide here.

Firstly, you’ll need a hob or hotplate as a heat source and a double boiler. Alternatively, you can use a pan, fill it with water & pop a bowl on top, which creates your own double boiler method. Thirdly, if you have a glass jug, you can use your microwave to melt your wax. Read our guide for more info on methods.

Thermometers are very important in candle-making – temperature is the difference between a good candle & a bad candle!

You will need a glass or metal jug to pour the melted wax in to. This is a jug which you will be adding colour & fragrance oil, so make sure you’re happy to use it as your ‘candle making jug’ in the future.

Now that the materials are out of the way, let’s discuss the variable materials. After all, if all candles were the same, how boring would that be? 

One of the most important products in a candle is the wax. Firstly, decide what wax you are wanting to use. Our top-selling waxes are Soya & Paraffin wax. 

The second most important component is the fragrance oil; all our fragrance oils are exclusively made, premium quality & concentrated. 

Our candle wicks are all tried & tested; we have provided an approximate starting guide for which wick you will need, dependant on your container size. You will find the guide in the description section of each wick. We recommend the LX Series wicks if you are working with Paraffin wax, & either Stabilo Series,  TCR Series or Eco Wicks if you are working with Soya Wax. 

Candle dyes are also available if you prefer a coloured candle. We have candle dye chips & candle liquid dye.

We stock small, medium & large candle containers (20cl, 30cl & 50cl and more!). Our glassware is high quality & candle-safe. 

Additional products that will make your life much easier:

Wick Stick Ums are a game changer! They are double-sided & stick your wick to the bottom of your container. These ensure your wick stays central.

Wick Centering Tool’s are another game-changer; they make life much easier when it comes to keeping your candle wick central (it’s harder than it sounds, honestly). 

You can use any utensil really to stir your wax, & to stir in your colour & fragrance, just make sure you don’t want to use that utensil for food any more. A spoon will do the trick nicely.

Fragrance Diffusers

Fragrance Diffusers are a great addition to any home!

Reed Diffusers and other Flameless Home Fragrance products are becoming ever more popular in today’s market. Fragrance Diffusers are a great way to effortlessly fragrance your home and are very simple to make from the comfort of your own home.

Here at Supplies for Candles, we provide all you need to not only get started but to excel in the Home Fragrance industry. We offer a wide variety of Flameless Home Fragrance materials, such as Reed Diffuser glassware, Electrical Plug-In Diffusers, Car/Wardrobe Diffusers & Room Spray materials. 

What are my options?

Reed Diffusers:

Depending on your desired result, we recommend different products. For instance, a Reed Diffuser is best suited in a small – medium-sized room, if the room is too large, the fragrance throw will be weaker. You will notice that we have more naturally pungent fragrances, along with more subtle fragrances. We would recommend a more subtle fragrance in a small bathroom and a more pungent fragrance in a medium (average) sized living room. If you are wanting to fragrance an extra-large room or office, we would recommend 2 Reed Diffusers. Reed Diffusers should last between 2-3 months if cared for properly; keep out of direct sunlight and away from hot surfaces (such as a hearth or radiator). You can super-boost the fragrance in your Reed Diffuser by turning your Fibre Reeds upside down, this gives an extra kick of fragrance. We have everything you need to make your own Reed Diffusers in your favourite fragrances!

Plug-In Diffusers: 

Another popular option is our Plug-In Diffusers.

These are best suited to small – medium-sized rooms and are very simple & easy to make; we stock everything you need to make these, as well as providing you with a photographed ‘how to’ guide here.

All of our fragrances are compatible with this product, so now you can have your home smelling like your favourite perfume! Plug-In Diffusers are a great alternative if you have small children or pets & have concerns about candles or other flamed alternatives. Our Plug-In Diffusers boast a fragrance throw setting, so you can choose from 1-5 depending on how strong you would like the scent throw.

Please note: We recommend turning off the device when you leave your home.

 Car Diffusers:

Our Car Diffusers are multi-purpose, & can be used to fragrance your wardrobe, dress room or bathroom!

Due to their size, we’d recommend using these in small spaces to get the best scent throw. These are very quick & easy to make; we stock 4 different colours – black, pink, silver & gold – all of our fragrance oils are compatible with these. These also make a great (& inexpensive) gift. Imagine having your wardrobe smelling like your favourite perfume … fabulous!

 Perfume Sprays:

Our Perfume Bottles allow you to create your own fragrance sprays to suit your desire.

You can use all of our fragrances & essential oils to create these along with a number of different bases to create them; we recommend researching this & choosing a method that suits you best.

Fragrance sprays are a great way to instantly freshen up your home or office. 

Are they toxic?

We provide you with 'How To' guides for our products, & providing you follow our recommendations, your product will not be toxic. Each fragrance oil has a different chemical make-up; if you are concerned about any allergens that a particular fragrance oil may contain, just check out the documentation that we provide readily available on the website, or ask our friendly staff. We recommend not using any essential oils around animals due to toxicity concerns, especially containing wintergreen, d-limonene (citrus), pine, cinnamon, pennyroyal, eucalyptus & tea tree.

Candle Colours

We offer an extensive range of colours that are perfect for use in Candles, Wax Melts, Soap Making, Bath Bombs and more. From Dye Chips to Mica Pigments, Glitters to Liquid Colours, please ensure you check which colour is most suitable for use in your required product.

We make sure that we stock a wide variety of colours for you to choose from, so don’t worry if the specific colour you want isn't yet stocked.

You can always mix colours to achieve your desired colour result and always add more dye for a richer intense colour, or start off with less colour for a pastel effect!

What are my option for Candles & Wax Melts?

There are two different types of dyes that you can use for candles and wax melts; Chip Dye & Liquid Dye.

They both give great results but are different to work with, but ultimately it does come down to personal preference and trial and error!

Bekro Chip Dyes

The Bekro chip dyes are easy to use and create a minimal mess.

We advise weighing the dye chips before adding to your candle wax for consistency purposes, or if you don’t mind a slight variance in colour with each batch, use your eye!

The Bekro Dye Chips should be used at 0.2%, therefore a 10g bag of dye will colour 5kg of paraffin wax.

Vegetable waxes may require a higher loading.

Please note the colours may differ from screen to screen, we always recommend testing your chosen colour before placing any bulk orders or making any products in bulk. 

Liquid Dyes

A little goes a long way! At Supplies For Candles we have two ranges of liquid dyes, Candle and Cosmetic.

Pop your gloves on, cover your surfaces and you will be ready to go! Our candle dyes are perfect for use in wax melts and candles and work especially well in wax.

You tend to need less liquid dye than dye chips to get a vibrant colour. Liquid dye is very easy use and there’s no need to worry about the temperature as much, as the dye is already liquid and doesn’t have to dissolve.

A good stir of the dye into your wax will do the trick. It’s very easy to record your recipes and data with liquid dye, as our liquid dyes come with a dropper, allowing you to easily monitor how many drops are going into your wax.

Our liquid dyes are available in 15ml dropper bottles.

How do I use Candle Dyes?

The dye can be added to solid wax & then melted together with the wax, or it can be added when the wax is already melted at approx. 70 – 75 degrees Celsius.

We recommend stirring the wax for approx. 2 minutes. You may need to stir the dye chips into the wax for longer than you stir the liquid dye, as the dye chips must fully dissolve. If they aren’t dissolving very well, heat your wax up again to 75 degrees Celsius; the dye chips will struggle to dissolve in wax which is too cool.

Typically, the more colour dye – either chip or liquid - you add to the wax, the deeper & more solid colour you will create.

You can create pastel & light colours with the exact same products, just use less of the colour.

Wax often looks darker in liquid form than it does when it is set, so we would recommend pouring a small amount in a teaspoon or small container to see what the colour looks like when it’s set. You can then make a decision to stick with the colour you have made, or add more colour to make your wax more vibrant. You can also mix colours, as well as adding shimmering Mica. Please note we only recommend using Mica in wax melts (not candles).

Mica Pigments

These powdered pigments often hold a lustre effect, which can be seen when mixing into your products.

Depending on the product you are making will depend on the required quantity, as well as your preference. Not all pigments can be used in bath bombs and soaps so please check to ensure the colour you have chosen is suitable to your product.
